Supporting a loved one

Support can begin with listening respectfully and recognizing that you cannot carry someone else's care alone.

Listen without taking over

Ask what kind of support would feel useful. Avoid forcing a conversation or promising an outcome. Reflecting back what you heard can be more helpful than immediately offering advice.

Respect boundaries

Encourage professional support while respecting privacy and choice. Keep your own limits clear, especially when you are tired or worried.

Care for the caregiver

Make room for your own rest and support. A trusted person, professional, or crisis resource may help you think through what to do next.

When safety feels urgent

If someone is in immediate danger, call 911. For mental-health, suicide, or substance-use crisis support in the United States, call or text 988. Do not wait for a website or WhatsApp response.
